Best IKEA Flat-Pack Furniture for Small Cars

IKEA lists product dimensions on every page, but these are the assembled dimensions — not the flat-pack box size. A BILLY bookcase that's 202cm tall assembled might only be 202 × 42 × 8cm as a flat box. That's a completely different transport challenge.

The package dimensions are usually buried at the bottom of each product page under "Package information." For multi-box items (like a PAX wardrobe), there are multiple boxes each with their own dimensions. This is where most people get caught out — they check the product size, not the box size.

When checking IKEA's website, scroll to the very bottom of any product page to find "Package(s)" details. You'll see:

• Width × Height × Length: Note that IKEA lists dimensions in their own order — always note the largest dimension as this determines whether it fits in your car's longest direction.
• Number of packages: A wardrobe might be 6 separate boxes. Each needs to fit. Add up all box heights to estimate total load volume.
• Weight per package: Useful to know if you're loading alone. IKEA recommends two people for anything over 25kg.

These items have box dimensions that work well in hatchbacks, sedans, and compact SUVs:

Some IKEA products look deceptively transportable but are actually very difficult to get home in a small car:

• PAX wardrobe frames: The largest packages can be 236 × 58 × 6cm — longer than most hatchback load floors even with seats folded.
• MALM bed frames (double/queen): Multiple large boxes, with the longest typically over 210cm. Needs a van or SUV with seats fully down.
• KIVIK and EKTORP sofas: Despite being flat-pack, sofa boxes are very large and oddly shaped. Usually need a van.
• HEMNES day bed: The main frame box is approximately 213 × 64cm — needs a large wagon or van at minimum.
• BESTA TV units (wide configurations): Multi-box items where individual boxes can exceed 180cm in length.

• Check every package individually. Multi-box items often have one large "awkward" box alongside smaller ones. That one box determines your car choice.
• Fold seats before loading, not after. Trying to lever a 2-metre box through a half-folded seat gap damages both the box and your car.
• Load diagonally for extra length. A hatchback with a square-ish boot can gain 10–20cm by loading a long box corner to corner.
• The passenger seat counts. Remove the headrest and recline the front passenger seat to transport items up to about 180cm long in most hatchbacks.
• IKEA's home delivery is often cheaper than you think. For large items, compare hire van costs against IKEA's delivery fee. For a $20 bookcase, a $50 van hire makes no financial sense.
